Meditation 2: Isaiah 268/25/2009 8:00:09 PM Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord God you have an everlasting rock. (Isaiah 26:4) As we age, we seek out sources of strength in order to survive. Sometimes that strength is our own; sometimes it lies in the presence of those we love or in financial security. Sooner or later, however, these sources of strength will be challenged, and we will come to understand the limits of them. No matter how strong we are or how carefully we build and arrange our lives, these things will ultimately fail. For strength to be genuine and have the capacity to endure, it must be rooted in the presence of God. Because God exists, there is strength available to us that exceeds all other strengths. Because God is compassion, that strength is always used for our good. It is never withdrawn or conditional. Trusting that, our own strength is given substance and life. We draw on God’s strength to live this life open to its possibilities, rather than hiding from its vagaries. We are not meant to live in fear. Rather than giving up on life, we must allow the anxious moments to teach us to lean more firmly into God’s grace. The strength of God can accomplish what we cannot. You, O God, envelop me with love. Teach me to draw my strength from you. Amen. |
