Meditation 3: Isaiah 318/25/2009 7:58:39 PM Isaiah 31:1-9 Alas for those who...do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord! (v.1) One of the greatest challenges of this life is to decide who or what will be our bottom line. What determines our priorities, where do we turn for answers to the deeper issues of life? In times of crisis, even the people of God can look to human things as answers for every dilemma. We excuse ourselves by affirming, “God gave us rational minds and we’re supposed to use them.” The problem is that all too often, we rely only on our ability to problem solve and leave God out of the equation. Alas for us when we do that, for we create additional confusion for ourselves. We move quickly to control, but what escapes us as we plan and cope is the intentionality with which God wants to direct our daily lives. The problem isn’t that we use human strategies; it’s that human strategy is all we use. We don’t trust God’s willingness to enter ordinary life and transform it into spiritual journey. We rely on our ability rather than God’s power to illuminate and teach. We forget we continually need to learn to see things more from God’s perspective, for that’s always the larger one. God of compassion, you lead your people in small and large ways. Help me to trust your guidance. |
