Meditation 6: Psalm 318/25/2009 8:00:46 PM Psalm 31:1-5, 19-24 I had said in my alarm, “I am driven far from your sight.” (v. 22a) Who hasn’t, at one time or another, felt far away from God’s sight? Some people use the image of God’s eyes as threat: God sees all, so you’d better watch out! Something akin to an all-knowing Santa who is just waiting to reward or punish. But to the people who know this God, the eyes of God show forth tremendous compassion. When we say we believe that God sees all we do and say, what we are affirming is the Presence of God that touches every part of our lives; it is the belief that God is deeply aware of us and works with purpose for our good. To be cut off from God’s sight is to lose our most precious Companion. It’s the loss of being watched over, guided and loved. There will be moments in all of our lives when we feel that disconnection, as though we turned a corner into chaos and God didn’t follow. Nothing feels worse than the absence of God, for we lose all hope that tomorrow will be better than today. When God seems hidden from our heart, that is precisely the time we must take God at God’s word, and live with absolute assurance that nothing in all creation can separate us from God. We may feel lost from God’s sight but that’s never true. It simply isn’t possible for us to be away from Divine Presence and love. In these moments of feeling lost, we must take a deep breath, quiet our hearts in prayer and let our words of need and longing take us straight into the heart of God, until once again, we feel sheltered and loved. You see into the heart of me, my God. Let me be content with each moment of grace, as it is given me. |
